Getting Started

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is Capcom's first new Onimusha entry in roughly 20 years. Set in early Edo-period Kyoto corrupted by Malice, you play as Miyamoto Musashi wielding the Oni Gauntlet against the Genma. The game is linear — not open world — and designed to be accessible rather than punishing.

New to Onimusha?

  • Start with the free demo (~30 min) at Kiyomizu-dera Temple to learn Parry, Deflect, and Issen.
  • Failed timing usually results in a normal block — not instant death. The game rewards practice.
  • Focus on one defensive skill first: Deflect Issen is the most forgiving entry point.
  • Yellow souls heal, blue souls upgrade, red souls level your sword — absorb souls while moving.

Returning Samurai

  • Break Issen lets you target specific boss body parts — head for damage, chest for red souls.
  • Chain Issen returns with slow-motion targeting between slashes.
  • Oni Armament weapons (bow, clubs, spear) consume blue souls for devastating attacks.
  • Magic Mirrors upgrade your blade; backtracking to earlier areas is viable for soul farming.

Demo (Available Now)

  • Play the early story at Kiyomizu-dera and fight rival Sasaki Ganryu.
  • Demo save data does NOT carry over to the full game.
  • Demo players receive Charm: Kubi Akari in the full release (linked to demo save).
  • Try Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption before buying.

Combat Systems

Way of the Sword centers on blade-on-blade swordplay with three defensive layers and high-reward counterattacks. Understanding Parry vs Deflect vs Issen is the single most important skill.

Light & Heavy Attacks

Square (PS) / X (Xbox) for quick slashes; Triangle / Y for heavy strikes. Combine with movement for fluid combos.

Parry

L1 / LB held before impact blocks from all directions. Drains enemy stamina faster than blocking and often repositions Musashi behind foes.

Deflect

L1 + X / LB + A reflects projectiles back at enemies or into other foes. Also drains enemy stagger meter. Bait archers to eliminate groups.

Issen

Strike just before an enemy attack lands for a cinematic one-hit kill. Chain multiple Issens in slow motion to wipe squads.

Break Issen

When a boss posture breaks, choose a body part: head deals bonus damage and breaks shields; chest yields more red souls for upgrades.

Posture System

Both Musashi and enemies have stamina/posture meters. Depleting enemy posture opens Break Issen opportunities.

Parry Gauge

Perfect parries fill this bar. When full, your sword glows blue for bonus damage until the effect fades.

Dodge Gauge

Three flawless dodges unlock a follow-up strike that extracts souls — often healing or energy.

Oni Power Gauge

Activates dual daggers with brief invulnerability, pulling yellow souls for recovery during the assault.

Souls & Progression

Defeated Genma release three soul types absorbed through the Oni Gauntlet. Unlike older entries, you can absorb while moving — a major quality-of-life upgrade.

Yellow Souls

Restore Musashi's health. Prioritize absorption during lulls in combat.

Blue Souls

Currency for Oni Armament and Magic Mirror upgrades. Spend on weapon unlocks and stat boosts.

Red Souls

Experience for sword leveling. Break Issen chest strikes yield extra red souls — trade damage for long-term power.

  • Visit Magic Mirrors to upgrade your sword and magic abilities.
  • Return to earlier areas — enemies respawn, making bridge sections ideal for soul farming.
  • Oni Armament kills grant bonus yellow souls, rewarding aggressive weapon use.
  • Charms (equippable items) provide passive buffs — pre-order and edition bonuses include exclusive charms.

Oni Powers

The Oni Gauntlet is central to Musashi's revival and combat. Unlike past protagonists, Musashi resents the gauntlet — it houses the Oni Lady, who speaks to him throughout the journey.

Oni Gauntlet

Absorbs souls from fallen Genma. Multiple gauntlet wielders exist — Ganryu embraces his while Musashi reluctantly accepts his.

Oni Lady

A spirit within the gauntlet who guides Musashi. Absorb dark masses in the environment to glimpse past events and story lore.

Oni Armament

Limited-use super weapons powered by blue souls: bow, dual clubs, spear, and more. Devastating but require charging.

Oni Awakening

Musashi's eye glows gold, revealing Genma vision. Used to solve puzzles requiring hidden object detection.

Environment Interaction

Flip tables as shields, redirect projectiles into torches, and use terrain to stagger grouped enemies.

Characters

Way of the Sword reimagines legendary figures of Japanese history through a dark fantasy lens. Musashi's journey intersects allies and a fated rival.

Miyamoto Musashi

Protagonist

The legendary sword saint revived by the Oni Gauntlet. Dual-wield master seeking his reason to fight through blood-soaked battles across corrupted Kyoto.

Sasaki Ganryu

Rival / Boss

Musashi's arch-rival wielding his own Oni Gauntlet. Multiple encounters test your parry timing. Demo finale boss at Kiyomizu-dera.

Oni Lady

Gauntlet Spirit

The voice within Musashi's Oni Gauntlet. Provides guidance and narrative context as Musashi reluctantly embraces Oni power.

Ono no Takamura

Ally

Master swordsman and poet who joins Musashi's path. Brings wisdom and support during the campaign.

Izumo no Okuni

Ally

Founder of kabuki who adds color to the story. Premium Deluxe Edition includes ally outfit cosmetics.

Enemies & Bosses

Genma — demons from the underworld — range from sword-wielding foot soldiers to legendary yokai. Boss fights emphasize parry mastery and Break Issen tactics.

Genma Foot Soldiers

Standard melee and ranged units. Practice Issen chains on groups. Deflect arrows to clear archers without closing distance.

Sasaki Ganryu

Demo boss and recurring rival. Sword duel testing parry timing. Break Issen: face for shield break + bonus damage; chest for red souls.

Genma Byakue

Preview boss with two targetable body parts. Break Issen animations are unique per body part and never repeat.

Nue

Legendary yokai boss capable of lightning attacks. Requires reading telegraphs and maintaining parry rhythm.

Shuten Doji

Colossal Genma at Mount Oe fortress outside Kyoto. Trailer showcase of Musashi's full Oni Warrior transformation.

Sasaki Ganryu

  • Parry consistently to drain Ganryu's stamina faster than blocking.
  • When posture breaks, evaluate your needs: low health → head strike; need upgrades → chest strike.
  • Ganryu uses Oni Gauntlet abilities — expect soul-powered special attacks.
  • Multiple encounters throughout the campaign — strategies evolve each time.

Beginner Tips

1

Master Deflect Issen First

Parry then immediately attack. Failed timing usually blocks — making this the safest high-reward technique to practice.

2

Read Boss Color Codes

During Break Issen, body parts are color-coded: red for damage, purple for bonus souls. Match choice to your current needs.

3

Keep Gauges Active

Chain parries to maintain blue flame bonus damage. Three clean dodges unlock soul-extracting finishers.

4

Use Environment

Deflect projectiles into enemies or torches. Flip furniture for cover against archer squads.

5

Farm at Magic Mirrors

Backtrack to respawning enemy areas near bridges. Efficient for blue and red soul grinding before tough bosses.

6

Try the Demo Before Buying

30 minutes covers core mechanics and the Ganryu fight — enough to decide if the combat loop suits you.
