Onimusha: Way of the Sword Controls

Way of the Sword ships two control types. Basic (sometimes described as Defensive) parks guard on a bumper so you can hold a wall and still press attacks. Active (Aggressive) piles the action buttons on the right hand for players who already live in character-action games. Issen is not a unique key — it is an attack pressed on a beat. Pick the layout before the first Genma, then stop thinking about the pad.

Issen slash in Onimusha: Way of the Sword — the move is an attack input, not a unique button

Which control type to use

Producer Kadowaki’s own memo is the cleanest summary: Basic splits offence and defence across the two hands so you can fight from behind a hold. Active clusters action on the right cluster for a more “intuitive” mash if you already trust your fingers. Basic is the one this wiki assumes in every Issen and parry example, because the demo default and most published charts use it. If you came from older Onimusha or from Resident Evil’s hold-to-aim muscle memory, stay on Basic.

Active is not “hard mode.” It is a different home for guard. Issen still has no dedicated key. People who “cannot Issen” after a layout swap usually moved guard onto a face button and then tried to attack with the same thumb. Rebind or revert; do not blame the window.

Japanese and Western charts disagree slightly on whether soul absorb lives on L2/LT or on a hold of R1/RB — Capcom’s own Weekly Oni Memo described deflect as “hold L1, then another button,” while some English roundups listed absorb on R1 hold. Trust the in-game prompt in your language build, then come back to this table as a memory aid. The combat system page explains what the buttons do; this page only says where they sit.

Active / Aggressive layout

On Active, guard moves onto a face button (Square / X on the Japanese chart) and the two attacks plus dodge shuffle around it. Interact often lands on a bumper. The idea, per Game Informer’s Osaka feature, is confidence: attack buttons under the right thumb, defence as a tap rather than a hold. If you main Blade Barrage and Issen, Active can feel faster because the answering attack is already under the thumb that was guarding a beat ago. If you main a long parry hold to steer enemies — Wikipedia’s “prolonged parry” note — Basic is still the saner home.

PC users should open the remap screen on first boot of the demo and put absorb on a key they can hold while moving. The quality-of-life change versus the PS2 games only matters if the key is not also your jump.

Issen has no unique button

Press one-handed or two-handed attack at the moment the enemy hit would connect. That is the entire input. Chain Issen is the same press during the slow-motion follow-up, steered toward the next body. Break Issen is a prompt after a posture break. If a video says “press B or Y to chain,” that is the Xbox Active or a localised face map — translate it to whichever attack keys you bound. The Issen guide is the timing page; do not hunt a missing key.

Accessibility: there is no official “easy Issen” toggle in the retail notes. PC players already have unofficial mods that widen windows. This wiki will not walk through those. Practise on demo fodder, then Ganryu, then stop.

Frequently asked questions

Does keyboard and mouse work?

Yes. The demo already has public keyboard clears. Expect to remap absorb and guard. A controller is still the intended feel.

Can I change control type later?

Yes, in the options menu. Do it between rooms, not mid-boss, or your muscle memory will throw the next parry.

What button is Issen?

There is no Issen button. Press an attack on the impact frame.

Why does L1 feel like it does nothing?

On Basic, L1 is a hold-to-guard that covers all angles. Tap it as a panic parry only if you already see the swing. Holding it through a red grab will not save you — grabs need the counter button.
