Onimusha: Way of the Sword Issen

Issen is the series’ one-flash counter: you attack at the instant the enemy attack would hit you, and the screen answers with a cut that ends most fodder and chunks a boss. There is no meter. There is no unique button. CAPCOM left the timing unmarked on purpose. That is why demo comment sections fill with “I thought it was a parry.” It is an attack. Press it late enough to be scared, early enough to still be alive.

The input, without folklore

Press one-handed or two-handed attack on the frame the hit would land. That is Issen. Guard is not part of True Issen. Dodge is not part of True Issen. If you came from Sekiro, the closest cousin is a perfect deflect that you issue as an attack instead of a block. If you came from the PS2 Onimusha games, the cousin is the original Issen — still the hardest move in the set, still a kill on small enemies, still a heavy chunk on large ones. Combat director-side comments to Game Informer said the brief this time was to make the animation readable: you should see the afterimage, not just a flash.

A practical comment from the demo community is worth repeating: tilting the movement stick into the incoming swing as you press attack makes the window feel larger. Treat that as a hint, not a requirement. The controls page lists which face buttons are attacks on your layout. If you swapped to Active, your “Issen key” moved with the attacks.

Mastering Issen — Chain Issen and Ganryu Issen only

ONGBAL’s two-minute reel (above) is the cleanest public Issen clinic: Chain Issen through a pack, then an Issen-only Ganryu clear. Watch the shoulder, not the blade trail. Pause on the Ganryu chapter if you are about to fight him. Then go to the demo — watching without pressing will not install the beat.

Chain Issen

Land a True Issen on one body in a group and the game offers a slow-motion steer into the next. Press an attack toward the neighbour. It plays like an Arkham takedown without the stealth tax, or like a tighter version of a chain kill. It does not work on bosses. Demo testers who tried to Chain Ganryu into a pillar wasted the window. Save Chain for the Oni Refuge packs and for any Kyoto street the walkthrough flags as a crowd.

If Chain refuses to start, you did not land a True Issen on the first body — you landed a normal kill. The afterimage and the audio sting are the tells. Without those, there is nothing to chain.

Break Issen

Empty a stamina / posture bar and Break Issen (Kuzushi Issen) becomes available. On fodder it is an execution with dismemberment. On bosses it is not a kill: you choose a body part. Head is extra damage and shield breaks. Chest is extra red souls for the upgrade path. That choice is the only “build” decision in the demo’s combat. The full game will add more charms (see items); Break Issen remains the in-fight economic lever.

How to practise without dying

Deflect Issen is the homework. Hold guard so a miss is still a block, then add the attack on the flash. AllThingsHow’s demo write-up recommended this as the first drill for a reason: you feel the same impact frame with a safety net. After ten successful Deflect Issen on the first Kiyomizu-dera pack, drop the hold and try True Issen. Then go to Ganryu. Then count ten Issen in a run if you want the Byakue challenge.

Common failures: pressing too early (you get a normal swing and eat the hit), holding guard during True Issen (you get a parry instead), and mashing both attack buttons (the game picks a messy input). One button, one beat. The parry guide is the sibling page — read it if your misses are becoming blocks you did not want, or blocks you did.

Frequently asked questions

Is Issen a parry?

No. True Issen is an attack timed to the enemy’s impact. Parry is a guard input. They share a beat, not a button.

Why is there no timing bar?

CAPCOM chose not to display one, even though other contextual actions do get prompts. The afterimage is your feedback.

Does Chain Issen work on bosses?

Not in the demo. Chain is a group tool. Bosses take standard or Break Issen.

Which attack button should I use?

Either. Some players bind mentally to one-handed for speed. Use the one you can press without thinking.
